So, the decision was to use it as a good training block for RAAM, rather to take on a race with the full gas. To make it count, I did three century (100mile) rides in the week of the race. I am competitive by nature, so for sure I wanted to race for the win, but it was a bit of a gamble. I was pretty sure I got it in me to go for another 500+ miles, but knew it would be hard on me if anyone shows up ready for more.
To cut a long story short, there was a guy, Evens Stievenart, ready to do it and dislodge the king. Awesome job Evens, congratulations!
To make it clear, I did try to follow, but my legs weren’t quite up for it. So after maybe an hour of struggle, I decided to better pace myself and go for my thing than try to beat him and risk blowing up. I have to tell you, it was a lot more enjoyable after that. ????
A big thanks goes for Alexander Hernandez for keeping me fed for 24 hours. Excellent job Alex, cannot wait to share the experience of Race Across America in June! Hammer Nutrition was spot on, Perpeteum and Sustained Energy+Hammer Gels were 95% of my calorie intake.
Thank you James Broen for the photos and to you and Beth for hosting me this week. Always one of the best weeks of the year. I hope I’ll be back, next time with Irma, of course. ❤
